Blocking Fundamentals
- Pre-Block Positioning
- Maintain leverage on the defensive back
- Stay adaptable without knowing the exact play direction
- Be prepared to react to the ball carrier’s movement
- Contact Phase Techniques
- Start with low stance: butt down, elbows in, thumbs up, eyes at throat level
- Continuously move feet during engagement
- Avoid anchoring, which can lead to holding penalties
- Block Release Strategies
- Use “dead arm” technique when defender tries to disengage
- Drop arms to avoid holding calls
- Continue moving feet even after initial contact
Run Type Considerations
- Understand inside (10 and 2 o’clock) and outside run angles
- Adjust blocking approach based on run direction
- Recognize leverage (inside, outside, head-up) and adapt blocking technique accordingly
