The key to stopping scoring drives is to create negative plays.
In the clip below Baylor Defensive Coordinator, Ron Roberts shares an analytical breakdown of the impact of negative plays and the need to create Havoc on defense.
The data shows that dives at the FBS level that contain at least one negative play only produce scores 25% of the time. On the other hand drives that do not contain a negative play result in scores 43% of the time.
With that in mind, Coach Roberts states that he tracks and rewards actions that produce negative plays which he calls Havoc.
Plays deemed as creating Havoc are as follows:
- Interceptions
- Pass Break-ups
- Forced Fumbles
- Sacks
- QB Hits
- Tackles for Loss
He charts them and simply records them as a percentage of total snaps. He does this for games and practices.
His research shows that negative plays are created either because you have a dominant defensive player or with movement/stunts.
He then uses this info to help scheme to get his negative plays or create Havoc.
