Here’s a summary of this defensive blitz package film session:

OVERVIEW

This transcript is a coach’s film breakdown of a series of pressure packages/blitzes, walking through assignments, technique notes, and cut-ups of each call against both run and pass. The coach moves quickly through several named stunts, promising to share the full film afterward. Overall theme: crossing/exchange stunts (contain-then-scrape combos) designed to create confusion for the offensive line, paired with notes on personnel (mobile 4-techniques) needed to run them.

STANFORD

  • 4-technique loops to the A gap
  • Mike backer scrapes B gap
  • Stud/Will scrapes from D to C gap
  • Creates natural line-crossing confusion; offense often passes it off well, but one backer usually comes free
  • Shown against both pass (forcing an intentional grounding) and run (praised as “really, really well done,” with good gap discipline and squat-and-scrape technique, despite one player turning his shoulders instead of staying square)

UTAH

  • Nose guard loops opposite to the B gap
  • Mike and Will both blitz the A gaps (double A)
  • Nose’s stunt doubles as protection/distraction
  • Linebacker reads the puller, redirects, and makes a tackle for loss

TARHEEL / RAM

  • A pick-style stunt aimed at teams that run draws and screens
  • RAM = 4-man pressure (one side stunts)
  • TARHEEL = 5-man pressure (both sides stunt)
  • Tackle picks off the 4-technique, loops behind him, crossing the wires
  • Slows down half the D-line on purpose, making it easier to diagnose screens/draws
  • Resulted in a sack when the running back was fooled by color/flash

NEVADA

  • Will and Buck (or “Dragon”) come through the B gap
  • Adjusters (secondary) roll over the top in coverage
  • Example 1: Guard picks up the backer, but Buck still gets through for a QB hit (ball dumped off for a short gain)
  • Example 2: Backers run straight through both gaps for a tackle for loss

ARKANSAS

  • Nose tackle twist stunt combined with Will or Buck/Dragon off the edge into the C gap
  • Personnel-dependent: use Will if more coverage is needed, use Buck/Dragon for more speed off the edge
  • Nose loops to B, 4-technique loops to A, backer scrapes C
  • Produces a sack-fumble in one clip; in a playoff game example (“Arkansas Red”), the nose guard rips under the guard’s shoulder for another sack-fumble

PURDUE

  • Tackle takes the A gap, Stud takes first to C gap, Dragon loops to B gap (“plugger”)
  • Designed to spring the Dragon free
  • Coach notes: if you have big, mobile defensive tackles capable of two-gapping, this look is especially dangerous

COACHING TAKEAWAYS

  • Success across these packages depends heavily on personnel — specifically mobile, athletic defensive tackles/4-techniques who can both occupy blockers and still get skinny to loop.
  • Recurring technique cues: staying patient, scraping over the top, squatting on down blocks, and getting in the puller’s hip pocket.
  • These stunts are particularly effective against draws/screens because they naturally slow down blockers and let backers read-and-react.
