The effectiveness of your defense begins with the defensive line. Their ability to get off blocks and make a play on the run or to pressure the quarterback is essential if your are to have a championship level defense. Finding guys that are big, strong, explosive and play with tremendous effort is the first step in building a great defensive line. Once you find those guys, it is the coaches job to teach them the techniques that will allow them to better utilize their natural abilities.
In the clip below Brick Haley, University of Missouri (and previously at Texas and LSU) Defensive Line Coach, demonstrates the technique he teaches in his Steer Drill. In this drill he teaches defensive lineman to push one shoulder of the offensive lineman and pull the other as an effective method to steer them to where they want them to go.
