The corners stay on their side it’s not a match coverage where they would go over and match up on the receiver. And I’ll leave this up here for a while I’m talking through but these are the base rules. The corner backs basically you’re man to man on number one.
Your alignment can be inside press or inside catch based on split and when we are talking press technique.
You’re teaching press technique it’s important that you let your corners know that it’s a little more inside leverage then it would be up the field so if we were up the filed an pressing we would be outside out and inside out or foot to crotch.
Down here in the red zone we’re going to align outside shoulder to the receivers inside shoulder so we are definitely denying the inside release by aligning.
If you’re playing catch technique the rule is you’re half the difference from the goal line. So if we were on the twelve yard line, our corners would align inside and on the six yard line. As they get tighter obviously you get tighter. Once you get inside the five yard line and your basically going to turn and press any way. But, it’s a way that if you have a five disadvantage meaning big receiver versus a corner you can play a catch technique to help with some of those things to use your quickness.
Again the footwork for the corner is the same. It would be in press so you’re going to be in a square stance and you’re gonna be working horizontally. I call it step from the place or you might here call shuffle mirror. But, you’re not in the split stance and your definitely by no means back down to versus the dead side or tight end.
You can go anywhere from five by three to four by three alignment. You want to make sure you can leverage the formation.
The base rules for the corners are that any run to your man, you’re secondary run support. If you’re in a tight end side you are forced it is called what I call shuffle and attach technique. Versus a tight end on run away you’re closing down on the hips and your going to cut that player.
The task responsibilities: man to man on receiver eliminate the slants and the fades. By no means and really the biggest coaching point that I give these guys is when a receiver sees you and heavy inside alignment their gonna try to outside stem you to get you to move your feet and to beat you back across the face. So, the coaching point that I use to I tell our guys first of all your hands first meaning literally I say reach out and grab them.
What that does it puts the corner in trail position and that’s where we want to be in red zone coverage. We want to be underneath the routes and between the receiver and the ball. Hands first also allows them to be more aggressive. You go with two hands down here that’s not a problem and what we tell them is to be patient on outside release and patient away and urgent to your letters.
So, if I’m getting an outside release I don’t want to be in a big hurry to try to beat him across the face because then he’ll come back underneath me and slant will be wide and open. If he’s running a slant I want to be heavy inside and urgent with my feet flatten out the route and stay in front of the slant. Not really worried about how flow goes on you can be a little more aggressive.
Another rule is you’re getting a shallow route and its coming hard and inside away as you start to squeeze you have the ability to squeeze it towards zone defender and you can see that as we go any cut split or tight split meaning if the balls on a hash and you getting a receiver close to the hash we will go outside leverage on that alignment. Coaching points, if thread or face on the normal split you can work outside to cut it off before push the receiver back outside always be aware your gonna gain help somewhere and its usually gonna be you have a squeeze route close to the hash to get it ok if you have a super wide split and you know you can get your receiver to that hash mark landmark you gotta play it hard inside and you gotta cut off…
