Into our six man play action protection so six man means five linemen running back play action faking some kind of run play. Our package most of the time is some type of inside zone play. We’re still always protecting the quarterbacks backside. We still don’t want to allow any A gap run through. Four weak pressure is handled by the slide side, four strong is handled by redirecting the protection.
The running back has a dual read. He’s inside the outside and the quarterback is responsible for the seventh defender call side widest. So those are your basic principles. So here we’ll look at a play action clip kind of shifting the formation. Looks like a run play. Our inside zone read play. A little play action trying to get the linebackers to bite the linebackers bite and then try to hit a second level pass over top of the linebackers again the faking the running backs that’s faking is responsible for the play side linebacker. In this particular protection he would abort his fake if this linebacker were to blitz,
So we’ll take a look at this end zone view so this is tied directly to a run play that we’ve probably already run in the game. Here’s our slide side so they have A, B, and C gap. The tackle on the slide side can show pass the most because that’s probably not where we’re trying to fool a guy. We’re usually trying to fool someone on the man side, so we’re trying to make it look like we’re run blocking. Here you can see the guard coming off with the good load demeanor–boom hands inside. Same with the tackle, hands inside.
Our coaching point is heavy inside V of the neck. So, were gonna try to hit the inside V. You can see both the guard and the tackle are attacking the inside V.
Their hands are inside, low hat. We also talk to the offensive linemen about the harder you hit them the more they stick to you. If you come off with a run demeanor they’ll stick to you if you come off with a high hat soft then they’re gonna transition right into a pass rush move. We get what we want here and we hit a vertical route over top of the linebackers because they stepped up and played run.
Take a look again here play action fake alright. Yeah here’s a good example of what we talked about–pressure coming from the front side. We re-directed the protection and redirected the protection to the man side so we could pick up one two three four rushers to the man side. So, there we go we redirected the protection strong there. We could pick up four strong and we’re able to protect and make a nice throw and hit a pass. So, we have play action call here and I said that the running backs job is to abort the fake if the man he’s responsible for blitzes. In this particular play action protection we’re feeling they’re gonna bring pressure form the man side the running back aborts his fake to protect and we’ve redirected the protection to make this the Mike the ID and now we have a chance to pick this thing up. We did a nice job picking it up hit a big play so that’s the protection being adjusted by the quarterback and the running back adjusting his fake.
