This training focuses on developing proper press man coverage techniques through progressive drills that emphasize footwork, hand placement, and visual keys.
BOXING PAD DRILL FUNDAMENTALS
The coach uses boxing pads to create specific target points rather than allowing unfocused contact. This trains defensive backs’ eyes to track and transition while maintaining proper hand placement. The drill progresses through three phases:
- Three Punch Sequence: Simulates receiver releases with strikes away from leverage, to leverage, then away again
- Single Stick Work: Real releases opposite the defender’s leverage position
- Punch and Clear: Two-arm punch followed by clearing feet and converting to one-arm control
STEP-MIRROR-KICK PROGRESSION
The core technique involves a three-step process:
- Step: 6-inch lateral movement to maintain leverage
- Mirror: Stay square to the receiver’s cylinder
- Kick 45: Transition at 45-degree angle when release is determined
LADDER DRILL APPLICATIONS
The agility ladder serves multiple purposes in press coverage training:
- Phase 1: Basic step-replace movements working lateral transitions
- Phase 2: Multi-directional stepping while maintaining square positioning
- Phase 3: Adding a receiver body with step-replace-kick-crossover-run sequence
- Phase 4: Full route simulation including crossover run and breaking on routes
KEY COACHING POINTS
- Maintain square positioning at the line of scrimmage
- Keep eyes on receiver’s hips during downfield coverage
- Drop outside arm once release direction is determined
- Match receiver’s movements: “when he sits, I sit”
- Always finish drills with ball work to simulate game situations
The progression builds from basic hand-eye coordination through complex route coverage, emphasizing low-impact, high-volume repetitions that reduce injury risk while maximizing technique development.
