This drill focuses on developing proper block shedding technique for linebackers facing head-up blocks. The linebacker starts in a head-up position against the blocker and must execute a specific sequence to defeat the block while maintaining vision on potential cutback runs.
TECHNIQUE FUNDAMENTALS
The core technique involves pressing the blocker and working to attack the outside shoulder. The linebacker extends his outside arm long while simultaneously pulling back with his trailing arm, creating leverage against the blocker. Critical to the drill is maintaining eye discipline – the linebacker must keep his eyes up to watch his second key, specifically looking for the ball carrier to potentially cut back behind the play.
LEVERAGE AND POSITIONING
The drill emphasizes using the blocker’s momentum against him through proper hand placement and leverage. The “wrist over wrist” technique is highlighted as the key to gaining control of the blocker. Once the linebacker establishes this control, he transitions into a square stance, positioning himself to make the tackle or pursue the ball carrier effectively.
COACHING POINTS
The drill stresses the importance of simultaneous actions – defeating the block while maintaining proper vision and positioning for the play. The linebacker cannot simply focus on the block but must remain aware of his responsibilities in the overall defensive scheme, particularly watching for cutback opportunities that could develop behind the initial flow of the play.
