The 3-4 Defense requires strong play from the outside linebackers. The outside linebackers need to have saftey speed, defensive lineman size and a middle linebacker attack mentality. Even when we are lucky enough to find guys with those qualities, they still need to be taught the correct fundamentals and appropriate reads.
In the video below Mike Dewitt, Coppell High School (TX) defensive coordinator, explains how to teach the outside linebacker to defend the outside zone and make a proper tackle on the cutback. This is just one of several teaching points regarding outside linebacker play in the 3-4. When the outside linebacker reads zone away he has what coach calls a Static Read. He does not know if the QB is gonna keep the ball or if the running back is going to receive it. He must play the quarterback keep. To do so he must make sure that he does not overlap the QB and lose leverage as he flows with the play. He must also stay at depth so that if the running back receives the ball, he will be in position to run downhill through the cutback.
The coaching points for making a Cutback Tackle are as follows:
1. Run through the cutback
2. Tackle with same leg and same shoulder (hit with inside shoulder and inside foot forward)
3. Eyes up and head across.
4. Chest up
5. Speed up the feet
6. Finish with hips front side (so that runner falls sideways or backwards)
