DRILL #1: SIX-POINT EXPLOSION DRILL

This drill focuses on explosive power from a six-point stance using heavy bags. The coach emphasizes:

  • Starting position: Six-point stance with flat back
  • Execution: Explosive movement from balls of feet through palms of hands
  • Goal: Create a “rattlesnake attack effect” – coiling up and exploding off the line
  • Purpose: Trains players to lead with hands while maintaining explosive get-off
  • Application: Particularly useful for six technique or shade positions where the defender is close to the ball

GAME APPLICATION EXAMPLES

Multiple game clips demonstrate the technique in action:

  • Defenders maintaining flat backs with proper pad level
  • Extension through contact with continuous leg drive
  • “Decapitating” opponents by getting underneath their chins
  • Creating significant knockback through proper technique
  • Avoiding the common mistake of feet sprawling on contact

DRILL #2: SINGLE MAN SLED DRILL

This follow-up drill provides a specific target for striking:

  • Target focus: Eyes should aim below the “seven” on the sled
  • Key concept: Keep “chin underneath his chin” for proper pad level
  • Technique: Explosive movement “from the ground to the man”
  • Finishing move: Always complete with a “shrug release” (violent release on contact)
  • Advantage: Non-stationary sled allows practice of the escape portion

COACHING EMPHASIS

Throughout both drills, the coach consistently stresses:

  • Maintaining aggressive attack posture
  • Generating knockback through lower body power and proper pad level
  • Continuous foot drive through contact
  • Avoiding “stopping and sprawling” on contact
  • Using proper technique to be a “factor” on plays

The video demonstrates how these fundamental drills directly translate to game situations, helping defensive linemen develop the explosiveness and technique needed to defeat blocks effectively.
