Key Positioning Principles
- Defensive players aim to maintain a “2 by 2” position relative to receivers
- Positioning is defined as 2 yards in front and 2 yards inside of the receiver
- Primary goal: Be “low and inside” through 12 yards before vision-tracking the quarterback
Footwork Progression
Control Phase
- Initial movement is a lateral shuffle
- Purpose: Deny quick game routes
- Allows defenders to let receivers “run by” while maintaining optimal positioning
Speed Phase
- Transition to crossover run if needed
- Aim to maintain low hip positioning relative to receiver
- Minimal movement is preferred – “less is more”
Route Matching Techniques
- Shuffle laterally to maintain position on different route types
- Keep hips flat to prevent drifting upfield
- Prioritize inside leverage on breaking routes
Rerouting Principles
- Only reroute receivers within defensive framework
- Use “lift and sift” technique
- Extended elbow (“long arm is strong arm”)
- Never chase reroutes
- Keep shoulders and hips square during contact
Vision and Coverage
- After 12 yards, transition to “pack the seams” and “pack the hooks”
- Maintain inside-out positioning
- Keep eyes on quarterback
- Be ready to react to checkdown routes
Coaching Emphasis
- Precise footwork
- Maintaining proper positioning
- Body control
- Understanding route relationships
