OVERVIEW

This coaching clinic focuses on teaching defensive backs the “dip and drive” technique for block destruction when there’s sufficient time and space between the blocker and ball carrier.

KEY PRINCIPLE

The defensive advantage: defenders know where the ball is, blockers don’t. This allows defenders to either engage/press blockers or use dip and drive techniques to avoid blocks and make plays.

THREE DAILY FUNDAMENTALS FOR DEFENSIVE BACKS

Every practice at Arkansas works on: block destruction, tackling in space, and playing the ball. These are essential skills needed on every play.

DIP AND DRIVE TECHNIQUE

The technique involves dipping the shoulder to reduce the blocking surface, driving through the blocker’s hips, and stacking the blocker to reach an unblockable position. Only used when there’s adequate time and space between blocker and ball carrier.

EXECUTION POINTS

  • Make fast decisions with no hesitation
  • Reduce blocking surface by dipping the near shoulder
  • Drive the elbow through to rip hands off if contact is made
  • Bend at ankles, knees, and waist to get lower than the blocker
  • Stack the blocker after clearing his hips
  • Fight pressure with pressure if the blocker tries to recover

DRILL APPLICATIONS

Film examples show the technique in cone drills, team settings, two-part drills, and game situations. Works for both defensive backs and linebackers. The coach emphasizes translating practice fundamentals to live game scenarios where defenders must be instinctual football players.
